Realizing Dreams, Sharing & Building Peace

Reflection on Local Exposure to Alor

By Thomas Yulianto

Alor is one of the easternmost islands of East Nusa Tenggara islands. Maybe some Indonesians do not know Alor as part of Indonesia, including me. But now I knew and even explored Alor for 15 days. I am so grateful for this extraordinary opportunity, not only to visit Alor and living with the people, but I can also share experiences and knowledge I have with young people in Alor, such as, simple video editing using the Kinemaster application, compiling videos to full videos that are interesting to watch.

The video editing abilities of youth who live in cities are different from those who live in a rural area, like in Alor. It does not mean that Alor youth are left behind in following technology developments, but the limited number of qualified people who train and assist them. In addition, gadget features and internet networks are less compatible with the video editing process. The specification of their gadgets did not 'support' the editing process, for example, low camera resolution, limited RAM, and small memory capacity.

I believe Alor youth can overcome this gap. I discovered several young people have the potency to produce interesting and qualified videos, regarding that Alor has extraordinary natural tourism charms, from its beautiful beaches to customs that are still strongly preserved and unique. These all are opportunities for the young people of Alor to create, especially nowadays people prefer to consume information through videos. Producing videos and uploading them on Youtube can be an option, so videos about Alor can be accessed by people all over the world.

In Alor, I shared skills of editing videos to produce interesting and qualified videos, although it was simple but important. Then, the young people in Alor can develop their skills and produce more interesting and qualified videos based on their ideas and creativity.

Never stop dreaming because everything starts from a dream. Previously, I could only dream to visit East Nusa Tenggara, eventually, it came true when I visited Alor island. Through the Local Exposure program to Alor, I am now open to a world and learn the importance of visiting other regions in Indonesia, know each other, build friendship and peace. Do not be afraid to dream and fight for the dream to come true.***
