Clean water crisis: should it repeat? The struggle to get clean water in Beamese, Manggarai

By Kresensia Risna Efrieno.

Who does not need water? Well, of course, everyone needs water, even we do like crazy to get water. Talking about water, what do we think about water? Drinking? Cooking? Or having shower? We know that not everyone can easily get water for their daily needs. It means some people still face water problems, especially clean water. This article is an expression of ideas that emerged from a series of Stube HEMAT Yogyakarta training activities on Water Security, where students as participants looked back at the importance of water and its problems, associated with news or incident related to water. One of the online media that reported the reality of the clean water crisis in the community, https://kumparan.com/florespedia/warga-desa-beamese-manggarai-alami-krisis-air-Bersih-1uRK3ysD17Y with the title the people of Beamese village face clean water crisis.

Based on the news above, the residents of Beamese village have difficulty getting water, especially during the long dry season. This is proof that there are people who have difficulty getting water. They face this situation almost every year during the dry season. The damage of the water reservoir they have is an obstacle to getting clean water. Because of this problem, they often struggle to get water, because the spring has a small discharge, they also have to share drinking water and agricultural needs. The phenomenon that occurred in Beamese has become a problem that is quite alarming. Why? Because people have to take water in turns and some even have to come at night to get water or others will get it earlier. Beamese itself is one of twenty-seven villages in the Cibal district, Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara which has a hilly geographical condition.

Water as a basic human need is limited, both in quality and quantity. The limited availability of water, both in quality and quantity, causes insufficient water needs, especially clean water, yet the ability of the community to access water and whether the water is evenly distributed to every level of society. No wonder the Beamese community asked to add one more well to increase their daily water supply.

From the problem above, actually, wells are not the only solution for Beamese residents to get water. It needs education to open people's minds that it is very important to know where they can get water from. In this case, the community needs to receive education and direction in any form so that they can get water even in the dry season. This can be started with an introduction to the importance of planting trees that are beneficial for water conservation as an effort to strengthen water catchment areas for springs. In addition, the community is encouraged to collect rainwater during the season and prepare adequate facilities such as water reservoirs. In my opinion, this is suitable for the community so that they can get an adequate supply of water during the dry season so that their water needs can be filled and not just drain the groundwater. The government is an important stakeholder to solve the problem so that it does not become a repeating case every year.

I found such thoughts about problems, analysis, and problem-solving in the training of Stube HEMAT Yogyakarta, especially with my major study in communication, I learn to see problems, analyze, and present ideas well, and I hope that the knowledge and experience I get, will be useful for my hometown, in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.***
