The Seed Growing in Wamena

The Stube HEMAT Yogyakarta program, which supports students' learning and personal growth through training, can be likened to a sower scattering seeds. Along life's journey, one such seed has taken root in Wamena, Jayawijaya, located in the Papua Pegunungan Province. It has grown into a source of hope for many young people in the region who continue to seek guidance in both their faith and intellectual development. These individuals hail from various regencies, including Yakuhimo, Lanny Jaya, Nduga, Pegunungan Bintang, Tolikara, and Yalimo.

Starting with a focus on health, hygiene, and awareness of HIV/AIDS and promiscuity, Dedikson Patras—known as Depa—joined by colleagues from various professions, began visiting schools and communities to educate and engage with young people on these critical issues. Those who showed interest and eagerness to learn more were welcomed into a community called Yesus Kita dan Sesama (YKS), meaning Jesus, Us and Others, which Depa founded in 2018. He is deeply committed to guiding young people so they may grow in reverence for God and lead lives rooted in truth. Today, the YKS community includes around 120 members who meet regularly twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays. You can learn more about their activities through the YKS youth YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i22IbYohPg

In addition to its ministry of sharing God's Word, YKS is deeply committed to supporting the education of young people. Through strategic networking and seizing available opportunities, Depa has successfully secured support to help them pursue their studies—from elementary and junior high school to high school and even university. While many attend schools within their local regions, others have continued their education in cities such as Medan, Palembang, Jakarta, Magelang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and North Morowali.

This pastoral model did not emerge easily. It was shaped through numerous challenges that required both enthusiasm and perseverance. His involvement in the Stube HEMAT programs from 1999 to 2005 provided him with a unique perspective. His theological studies at STAK Marturia Yogyakarta laid the foundation for his ministry, enabling him to serve as a special ministry pastor—reaching out to individuals with limited access and opportunities in the remote areas of Wamena.

Originally from Sangihe Talaud, Depa had to adapt to the distinct culture and lifestyle of Wamena—a transition that was not easy at first. However, his passion for serving the community helped him and his family (his wife and two children) become an integral part of life in Wamena. Due to its remote location, goods are typically transported to Wamena by air, making basic necessities relatively expensive—an ongoing challenge in his ministry. Yet behind the breathtaking natural beauty of the Baliem Valley, nestled in the heart of the Papuan mountains, there are countless calls to serve.

Complex humanitarian challenges—from social conflict and inter-communal violence to unresolved human rights violations—continue to affect the region. According to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), the conflict in Papua stems from ethnic tensions, miscommunication, and a lack of space for meaningful dialogue. In the midst of this reality, Wamena requires more than a political solution; it needs a sincere and sustainable humanitarian response. YKS stands present, embracing Wamena with love and empowerment. May these seeds take root, grow, and bear lasting fruit.***
