Wedangan #3: One Step Ahead

By Stube HEMAT Learning Garden in Gunungkidul / Bumi Rembaka.

Wedangan? Yes, Wedangan. In the Gunungkidul community, it is a local tradition of sharing tea or coffee with snacks in a relaxed, communal setting. More than just drinking together, wedangan fosters gathering, friendship, hospitality, and the exchange of information. It serves as an egalitarian meeting place that softens social boundaries and connects people across generations.

The philosophy of 'wedangan' inspired the Stube HEMAT in Gunungkidul to create a light and friendly dialogue with teenagers through Wedangan #3, held at the Bumi Rembaka garden (Thursday, July 9, 2026). Led by Trustha Rembaka, the discussion explores the theme One Step Ahead, emphasizing adolescence as a crucial transition toward adulthood. Teenagers, he explained, must develop self-awareness, identity, and independence to prepare for the future. Yet many encounter distractions, delays, or even stagnation that hinder their growth.

The "One Step Ahead" theme encourages teenagers to take deliberate steps toward becoming better individuals. Two attitudes are essential. First, a growth mindset—striving to improve each day, learning from mistakes, and staying curious about positive opportunities. Second, proactivity—acting on their own initiative rather than waiting for directions, daring to be independent, and taking responsibility for their decisions.

The "One Step Ahead" action plan is guided by SMART keywords: S - Specific, which defines specific and detailed goals; M - Measurable, which can be clearly measured in numbers or measurements; A - Achievable, which can be achieved according to one's abilities; R - Relevant, which aligns with one's values, interests, and social circumstances; and T - Time-bound, which divides time into stages toward the desired goal.

Participants shared practical examples of taking one step forward. These included practicing guitar for 30 minutes daily over a month (hobby), writing down one thing to be grateful for each day (spirituality), reading school lesson summaries for 30 minutes daily (academic), completing an English book within a month and writing a summary (hobby), finishing the Old Testament within three months (spirituality), and engaging in environmental actions such as providing bins for organic and inorganic waste, sorting household waste, and selling plastic bottles to the village waste bank.

'One Step Ahead' is not merely a slogan in words, but a commitment that manifests itself in action to pursue one's goals. Be a teenager who dares to take one step forward; why not? ***
